Thefounder, Richard Fleming, Bishop of Lincoln,was one of those unstable churchmen who, after befriendingthe Lollards for a while, turned against them with indecentzeal. When chosen to be Northern Proctor of the Universityin 1407, he was already a Canon of York, and his vehementopposition to the condemnation of Wyclifs doctrine in thatyear attracted general attention.^ He must ere long havemade his peace with the ecclesiastical authorities, for in 1420he was elected Bishop of Lincoln. Martin V. moreover nomi-nated him one of the papal chamberlains, and in 1424 trans-lated him to the Archbishopric of York. The Council ofHenry VI., however, not only refused to acknowledge thevalidity of this appointment, but declared the see of Lincoln * Wilkinss Co?icilia, vol. iii. ; Mun.
