Mary-Claire King (), American geneticist, examining human DNA senquences. After studying mathematics in Illinois, King turned to genetics. She is best known for identifying the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes responsible for inherited breast cancer, and for showing that human and chimpanzees are 99 per cent genetically identical. King has also unmasked genetic differences in how people with AIDS react to the HIV virus and her genetic work has helped to reunite families who were separated and displaced during the civil unrest in 1970s Argentina.
