Grey Friars House, Canterbury, Kent: the oldest Franciscan building (1267) in Britain, built over an arm of the River Stour.

The House of the Grey Friars built over an arm of the River Stour in Canterbury: the oldest (1267) Franciscan building in Britain. Built of flint, stone and red brick, probably as the dwelling of the Warden, it is all that remains of the Franciscan Community buildings established on a small island called Binnewith between two arms of the Stour. The Friary was first founded in 1224 by five friars on part of the garden of a Hospital of Poor Priests given by its Master Alexander of Gloucester; in 1267 they were granted land on the opposite side of the river. The Friary was suppressed in 1538, the house restored in 1919 and used for worship since 1974.
