John Knoxwas a man of exalted principles, great intellectual energy, undaunted intrepidity,and exemplary piety and morality. He was twice married, and had two sonsby his first wife. The monument to Knox, a view of which is given on the opposite page, was-erected by private subscription, in the necropolis, opposite the cathedral, Glas-gow. The statue of Knox, by which it is surmounted, says Chambers, seemslike the spirit of the reformer come back to inveigh, with outstretched arm,against the cathedral, and, if possible, to complete the work which he left un-Enished at his death. 1*0 ANNE BOLEYN,. ANNE BOLEYN. ANNE BOLEYN, daughter of Sir Thomas Boleyn, and known in English his-tory as the wife of Henry VIII., and as the occasion of the Reformation, wasborn at Hever castle, in the county of Kent, England, in the year 1507. Shewent to France in the seventh year of her age, and was one of the attendantsof the English princess, wife to Louis XII., and afterward to Claudia, the wifeof Francis I., and then of the duchess of Ale^on. About 1525y she returnedto England, and was at Hever castle when she received an intimation from herfather of his successful endeavors to have his daughter placed under QueenCatherine. Her reply in French is still extant. She went to court shortlyafterward, at the age of little more than twenty,
