An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of the Wright brothers – Orville (1871–1948) and Wilbur (1867–1912) and an illustration of their first aeroplane, the 'Wright Flyer'. The brothers were two American aviation pioneers generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world's first successful motor-operated airplane. They made the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft with the 'Wright Flyer' on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA.

In 1904–05, the brothers developed longer-running flights with the Wright Flyer II, followed by their first fixed-wing aircraft, the Wright Flyer III. The Wright brothers were also the first to invent controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible and their first US patent did not claim invention of a flying machine, but a system of aerodynamic controls for a flying machine's surfaces. The brothers gained the skills essential to their success by working in their Dayton, Ohio-based shop on machinery like printing presses, bicycles and motors. From 1900 they conducted many glider flights that developed their skills as pilots. The Wright brothers' status as inventors of the first aircraft has been subject to many counter-claims. This card is from a 1929 set entitled 'Scientific Inventions and Discoveries' (35 cards in the series). The firm of R and J Hill Cigarettes was established on Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London in the 1700s. In the twentieth century the company issued cards with their Sunripe and Spinet Oval cigarettes. The firm expanded to include H Archer and Co and issued cards, like this set, under 'The Spinet House' brand. The company no longer exists.
