These four Amsterdam regents, all sons or nephews of the incumbent mayors in 1648, laid in the same year the foundation stone of the town hall. On the pedestal the inaugural text, which refers to the Peace of Westphalia and the first stone. To the left of the base of the IJ river god (personification), including a ship's crown, fishnet, anchor and rudder. Right the river god (personification) of the Amstel, including an oar, grappling hook, water plants and a beaver - referring as dam-building animal to the dam on the Amstel Where: City thanks to his name.
