In 1789 a railroad or tramway was constructed atLoughborough, having cast-iron fish-bellied rails, fromthree to four feet in length, resting on stone blocksinstead of wooden sleepers, and requiring flangedwheels (Fig. 2). The first malleable iron rail was patented by , in 1820, and this form of permanent way,. 42 AN ENGLISH RAIL WA Y. with rails weighing 28 lbs. per lineal yard, was used onthe Stockton and Darlington Railway, and was subse-quently adopted by George Stephenson when he con-structed the Liverpool and Manchester Railway ; buthe increased the weight of the rails to 35 lbs. perlineal yard, their length being 15 feet. The rails restedfor the most part on solid stone blocks, laid diamondfashion, but on embankments and on peaty ground oaksleepers were used (Fig. 3). These rails, as will be seen from the illustration, were of the fish-bellied pattern, but in practice, andas the demand increased, these were found troublesometo roll, and this difficulty led to the introduction of theflat-bottomed or flat-footed section of rail, combininga solid head with a flanged base. This is known as the Vignoles rail (Fig. 4, No. 4), and, although stilllargely used in the colonies and abroad, it is very littlein use in this country except in the case of lines laiddown for temporary use by contractor
