Wortley Hall the ancestral home of the earls of Wharncliffe the Wortley family Sir Richard Wortley rebuilt the hall in 1586 After the Civil Hall fell into decay and was rebuilt from 1743 architect John Platt of Rotherham completed in 1761 The next major rebuild was during the Victorian period During 1939 45 the hall was at least partly used by the army and then once again fell into disrepair The Trade Union movement took over the hall in 1947 and the first meeting was convened on the 5th May 1950 The formal gardens
