Staircase of the house in which Shmuel Yosef Agnon a Jewish Nobel Prize laureate writer who was one of the central figures of modern Hebrew fiction was born in the town of Buchach which was once home to a large Jewish community and was annihilated, brutally, by the Germans during the Second World War in Ternopil Oblast (province) in western Ukraine.
