Theformer place had been missioned and given up some years before by a neighbour-ing circuit. Notwithstanding this discouragement conversions took place,a society was formed, and the work prospered for several years, but again had tobe given up, principally for want of a suitable room for the services, together withthe difficulty of reaching the town owing to its distance (sixteen miles) from mostof the preachers. But some seed remained, and was ready to spring up, whenanother and a better effort was made, and Buxton is now the head of a flourishingcircuit, and has the best chapel and society in this part of Derbyshire, and issupplying its villages with some of the most efficient local preachers in SITE OF THE JUBILEE AND ANNUAL CAMP-MEETINGS, WINSTEK. Precisely similar was the history of the village of Chelmorton now belonging toBuxton Circuit. It had been a famous place for Methodism. John Bennett hadpreached here with marvellous success, and amongst his converts were the forebearsof the Marsdens and the Lomases. But Methodism had died out of the village beforeour missionaries from Macclesfield visited it in 1821. A society of twenty memberswas soon established, but it had become extinct by 1834, when Thomas Hobsonremissioned it. The years passed, and once more the same work had to be done overagain; for though Thomas Hobsons mission was not without success since, amon^ hisconverts were Mr. and Mrs. Grindy, who became useful local preachers and leftdescendants who are giving a good account of themselves in different parts of the MM 530 PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH. Connexion—still, in course of time, Primitive Methodism died out of , yet a third attempt was made
