Shame-faced crab (Calappa calappa). This crab lives at a depth of 10-50 metres in the Indo-Pacific regions. Shame-faced crabs are so-named due to the way the crab's chelae (claws) fold up and cover its face (seen here), as if it were hiding its face in shame. The joints that allow the claws to do this bear a strong resemblance to barrel hinges used on doors etc. The carapace (shell) of this specimen measures 12cm wide.
