If we pass to the right side of the figure, that is, to theleft side of the patient, the contours of the median shadowpresent three semicircular salients or three superimposedarcs: the superior or aortic arc (AA) due to the out- SHADOW OF HEART IN NORMAL STATE 21 line of the descending portion of the arch of the aorta;the middle or pulmonary arc (AG) due to the salient ofthe pulmonary artery, below which is seen another smallsalient which corresponds to the left auricle; finally theinferior arc (GG) made by the outline of the left ven-tricle from the base to the apex. This last is very nearthe left dome of the Fig. 4. OETHODIAGEAM OF THE HEAET AND THE LAEGEVESSELS IN FEONTAL POSITION Particularly interesting contours for the study of thenormal or the pathological heart are found betweenletters DD and GG. The line DD defines in the normal state the contourof the right auricle. However, it may happen that, incertain patients, during radioscopic examination, clearpulsations are perceptible in the neighborhood of pointD. These are systolic pulsations and describe a faintmovement above the diaphragm. They are due to theright ventricle, which shows itself at this point. Particu-lar conditions are necessary in order that this phenome-non should occur. If the heart presents a vertical form,if it lies on the median line, if the apex is a little loweredand turned in, which results in a slight lifting and agreater salience of the right side of the heart, it is easily 22 THE HEART AND THE AORTA conceivable that the position of the right ventric
