The railway system of Austria-Hungary is extensive, far more so than might be supposed from the amount of the foreign trade of the country. Engineering difficulties of no mean order had to be overcome when crossing the Brenner, the Semmering, the Carpathians, or the Carso. The network of railways is, however, as yet far from complete.
