Edmond Waller, 17th century English poet. Waller (1606-1687) became emroiled in political intrigues in the 1640s and was arrested for his part in a plot to turn London into a royalist stronghold. He avoided a death sentence by means of bribery and by petraying his fellow plotters. In poetry he was influential in the development of the heroic couplet as the dominant form in English poetry by the end of the 17th century.
