Often the rebels objected;then we would have a fight, and appropriate theirworks — if we were the smartest. After supper,and half a ration of good (?) government whisky,and further stimulated by a wholesome respect forsomebody in gray in front of us, we turned to thefresh air new earth, and the morning light showedthe herculean labor of a few hours, just as a long lineof tired boys shouldered their knapsacks and movedout, and so on through the Wilderness to Spottsyl-vania, North Anna, and Cold Harbor.
