The growth on the scaffold branches of the Manzanillo was thinned out annually in order to lighten the weight of crop and foliage and reduce the tendency to droop. This was done also with Sevillano and Ascolano in cases where they showed the same tendency. The thinning was done by removing laterals or portions of laterals.
