Shredding corn. â A shredder is a machine thattears the stover into small fragments and which, at the. Fig. OS âCorn Hiikeh and Shrldi lr ^t \\ rk same time, removes the ear anrl takes from it nearly allof the shuck (FiR. 98). To dri\-e a shredder requires con-sidcraljle power. The followins are among the advantages of shreddingstover as compared with feeding it whole : â (1) The removal of the ears from the stalks and thepartial shucking of the ears; COEX IIAIirESTIXG 201 (2) The larger proiDortioii of shredded stover that iseaten; (3) The greater economy in handhng shredded stover, which can either be baled at once or blown by the shredderinto the barn; (4) The finer condition and greater value of the manurethat is free from long corn stalks, and the cleaner conditionof the field from which corn stalks have been removed. Against these advantages must be placed the cost ofshredding, including cost of power, labor, and interest, depreciation, and repairs on the shredder. These severalcharges have sometimes been found to range and S3 per ton of stover. 186. Corn cribs. â
