H., and was educated in thepublic schools of Boston. He served as an enlistedman in the First United States Dragoons duringthe war with Jlexico, and took part m the storm-ing of Monterey Sept. 21-23, 1846, and the battle otBuena Vista. Feb. 22-23. 1847. He afterwards ser^-ed with Texan Rangers mSonora and Arizona in suppressing Apache out-rages, employed bv the Mexican Governor ot Dur-ango. In the fall of 1853 he was of Walkers expe-dition to extend the area of freedom in I^owerCalifornia, and participated in the affairs at l/.iPaz. San Thomas and Ea Ensin
