Trees growing out of an argillaceous limestone pillar, Tianzi Mountain Scenic Area, Hunnan,

Zhangjiagie National Park in Hunnan Province, China is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its fantastic landscapes that were an inspiration for the scenery in the movie Avatar. The tall vertical quartzite sandstone pillars rise out of a thick diverse forest environment and a few trees manage to find a foothold in cracks in the pillars. As in much of Eastern China, the persistent air pollution prevented a clear view of all but the nearest pillars.
