Located strategically close to the Old Harbour, Limassol Castle in Cyprus has many layers of history. It was built over an Early Christian basilica (4C7th century CE) and a Middle Byzantine monument (10thC11th century CE). It was then rebuilt as a a castle by Guy de Lusignan in 1193. After the Ottomans captured the city in 1583, it was extensively rebuilt yet again and strengthened into the current structure. Some of the relics of its earlier incarnations - seen here - are now located on this courtyard outside the main gate.
