It has been separated intotwo subspecies, of which the northern, ruficollis^ extends north toXorth Carolina, Texas, and central Mexico, and south throughoutthe Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and Middle America to Ecuadorand Venezuela. The principal breeding range of the Louisiana heron in the UnitedStates is found in Florida and along the Gulf coast to Texas. Onthe Atlantic coast it is common north to Charleston, S. C.
