High angle view of the street market with stands of leather goods in San Lorenzo Central Market area in the city center of Florence, Tuscany, Italy

The history of Florentine leather, according to sources, dates back to 1282, when the Art of Tanners was born. Originally the tanning was done upstream and downstream of Ponte Vecchio, where it was common to put the skins to bath in the river Arno, then, because of the fumes, was moved to Piazza Santa Croce. However, it was in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that this art reached the highest point of quality.
