A memorial stone - Pilgrims Rock- at the New Zealand port of Lyttelton said to commemorate the spot where the First Canterbury Settlers came ashore in 1850. The stone is not presently at the waterside but a little inland due to land reclamation and the port's develoment. Every December 16th the `canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers Association reenact the settlers' arrival with a small ceremony. Many travelled on to Christchurch and beyond, an initial journey over the steep hills to escape the craters rim.
