View of the giant Collider Detector (CDF) at Fermilab , the particle physics laboratory near Chicago. The CDF records the collisions of protons & antiprotons accelerated to high energy in Fermilab's Tevatron collider. In the picture, two of the arches making up the central calorimetry system can be seen at each side of the detector. In front is the copper-coloured forward tracking chamber, with the hole through which the beam pipe carrying the particles passes. The CDF stands two stories tall, weighs 4500 tons, & was built by a collaboration of 170 physicists from the US, Japan & Italy.
