Waller Chloroform Balance, 1903-1968. Chloroform was used as an anaesthetic from the mid 19th century, but there were fatalities, often due to overdosing. Augustus Desire Waller (1856-1922) devised an apparatus which gave a continuous reading of the concentration of anaesthetic chloroform vapour delivered to a patient, thereby reducing the chance of overdose.
