This permission should be taken advantage of from the beginning, as the gun-sling helps greatly to secure steadiness in aiming. The adjustment of it is a trifle difficult at first, but when once learned it is of the greatest assistance in making high scores. Note.—The following sketches and description show the best method ofusing the sling in aiming. 308 The Landing-Force and Small-Arm Prepare the Sling. Fasten button end of strap to butt swivel, reeve the other end throughthe lower band swivel, and then hook this end back to the lower bandswivel. The loop (a) now hangs free. Put the slide (b) on it. (Seeplate 8).. Plate 8. Art. adjust the sling for use in aiming. Put the loop over the left arm between the elbow and shoulder, well the slide down against the arm, to hold loop in position. Then inassuming the position of aim, so grasp the rifle with the left hand, thatthe loop-part of the strap is to the right, and the single part to the leftof the left forearm, about at the wrist. Some slight adjustment isnecessary to get this arrangement to fit a man, but when the adjustmenthas been decided upon, it can be assumed very quickly, and will cause amarked increase in the mans steadiness.^ The same adjustment of strapto be used for all positions of firing. The only variation is in the caseof a man with very long arms, when the hook-end of the strap is hookedin its own part near the lower band swivel, instead of in the gives the necessary increased length of loop. The guiding criterion, in the use of the
