The jet set is long gone. Elisabeth Taylor loved to stay in Varosha. Sophia Loren and the British royal family are said to have owned their own homes here. The district of Varosha (Kapalı Maraş) in Famagusta (Cyprus) was between 1970 and 1974 one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Its Greek Cypriot inhabitants fled during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, when the city of Famagusta came under Turkish control. It has remained abandoned ever since and the buildings have decayed.
