The proprietor,as usual in such circumstances, promptly stoppedthe fray, and tied his dog with a piece ofstout string to a hook behind the bar. Thediminutive dog, which had- noted all the pro-ceedings, was , evidently disgusted with theabrupt and premature termination of what hadpromised to be a right royal canine He worried and pnawed. and to the amusement of the proprietor anda crowd of men on the other side of thebar, the tiny mite began to worry the stringwhich secured his fighting comrade. He worriedand gnawed, gnawed and worried, until at lengthhe actually severed the string in two. Thesullen prisoner, who had all along taken butpassive interest in his chums apparently futileendeavours, suddenly realised that he was free,and, with a a bound, thereleased gladiatorcleared the coun-ter and went inquest of hisenemy. Merewords cannotadequately pour-tray the look ofbitter disappoint-ment and intensedisgust on thelittle dogs facewhen the secondedition of thefight, like the first,was promptlynipped in thebud by the alertand peace-lovingproprietor.
