Two entirely separate setsof coils make up the field windings; one, the main fieldcircuit for producing the effective magnetic field, andthe other, an auxiliary or compensating winding whichbalances the armature reactance in the field. The mainfield windings are made up of coils of several turns ofstrap copper, and in general are very similar in con-struction to those used on the common large direct-current motors. They are held in place by clamps insuch a manner that it is possible to remove them forrepair without disturbing the auxiliary windings.
