Uveitis. Close-up of the eye of a 77 year old woman showing uveitis. It has caused the sclera (white of the eye) to become severely bloodshot. Uveitis is any inflammation of the uvea of the eye, which includes the iris (coloured part), the lens muscles and the blood vessels which supply the retina. This condition is rarely caused by an infection. Usually it is an autoimmune disorder, in which the body turns its defences against itself. However, it can be caused by infections such as syphilis and tuberculosis. Treatment involves taking corticosteriod drugs to reduce inflammation, and atropine is dropped into the eye to block nerve impulses to the iris muscles.
