Uterine fibroid, coloured X-ray. Injection of a contrast medium (dark brown) shows the fibroid as a brown mass in the uterus (centre). This frontal view shows the contrast medium filling both the uterus and the Fallopian tubes, the two branching structures on either side. A fibroid is a benign tumour of fibrous and muscular tissue. Most do not require treatment, but some can cause bleeding, pain and other disorders. Large fibroids may need to be surgically removed.
