When thecession was. made by Virginia, in 1784, a plan was offered, but motion had been made to strike from the proposed plan the prohibitionof slavery, which prevailed. The plan was then discussed and altered,and finally passed unanimously, with the exception of South this proposition, the Territory was to have been divided into states. by parallels and meridian lines. This, it was thought, would make tenstates, which were to have been named as follows — beginning at thenorthwest corner and going southwardly: Sylvania, Michigania, Cher-sonesus, Assenisipia, Metropotamia, Illenoia, Saratoga, Washington, Poly-potamia and Pelisipia. There was a more serious objection to this plan than its category ofnames,— the boundaries. The root of the difficulty was in the resolu-tion of Congress passed in October, 1780, which fixed the boundariesof the ceded lands to be from one hundred to one hundred and fifty miles 60 THE NORTHWEST TERRITORY. square.
