Appleton, Gaynor, Schiff & Ridder, 1913. Shows the notification ceremony that took place on September 3, 1913 on the steps of City Hall, New York City, where Mayor William J. Gaynor was nominated for re-election. Bankers Jacob Henry Schiff (1847-1920) and Ruel Ross Appleton, Sr. (1853-1928) are shown with Gaynor. William Jay Gaynor had served a term as reform mayor of New York. Because the incorruptible Gaynor would not cooperate with the Tammany machine, Tammany refused to nominate him for a second term. So Gaynor was renominated by an independent group, and accepted their nomination.
