. Manual of mental and physical tests : in two parts : a book of directions compiled with special reference to the experimental study of children in the laboratory or classroom. ailed, the Maddox rod and the prismtest. Both are convenient, portable, and inexpensive, butpossess the disadvantage common to all tests for heterophoriaheld close to the eye, viz: that S does not always completelyrenounce the fusion-impulse. In the Maddox test, the so-called ^rod transforms for oneeye the flame of a candle into a long narrow streak of red light, while the other eye sees the candle flame naturally. Hetero-phoria is indicated by the lack of coincidence in these twoimages. The prism test, which is essentially an auxiliary test, consistsin producing artificial displacement of images by means of theprisms, and measuring /Sfs ability to produce voluntary fusionof these displaced images. A. THE MADDOX ROD TEST Apparatus.—Maddox multiple red rod (Fig. 37). Trialframe (Fig. 35). Candle. Meter stick. [A set of trial prismsmay be added. 1 Preliminaries.—Place the lighted candle on a level with S^aeyes and 6 m. distance, preferably in a darkened room. Ad-just the trial FIG. 37. maddox multiple bod. Method.— (1) Let fif close his left eye: place the Maddox rodin the frame before the right eye with the bars set should then perceive a long, narrow, vertical streak of redlight. Then let 5f open his left eye and at once state whetherthe red sti eak passes exactly through the candle flame. 178 SENSORY CArAClTY (2) Turn the rod until the bars run veitically. ^ will see ahorizontal red streak. Let him open his left eye and at oncestate whether the streak passes exactly through the candleflame. Results.—In the first test, the possible results are; (a)the line passes through the flame, orthophoria (Fig. 38); (h)the line passes to the right of the flame, esophoria or homony-mous displacement (Fig. 39); (c) the line passes to the left ofthe flame, exophoria or cross
