Detail from the faþade from the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, more commonly called the 'Duomo'. Florence, Italy. Started in 1296 based on Arnolfo di Cambio's design, but was not complete until 1436 when Filippo Brunelleschi engineered the dome. One of Italy's largest churches. The current faþade was designed by Emilio De Fabris in 1871 and was completed in 1887. The original, incomplete faþade was dismantled in 1588. The entire faþade is dedicated to Christ's mother.
