The Gambler from Mechel's "Triumph of Death" 1860
Death and a black Demon appear to be in a battle over the gambler in green at the table. Death has his bony hand on the man's throat, while the Demon grabs his hair. The card player at right tries to intervene with the Demon, while the player at left scoops up his winnings. Handcoloured engraving from Chretien Mechel's "La Triomphe de la Mort" (The Triumph of Death) published in 1860 in Stuttgart. It is believed that Mechel's engravings were not after Holbein, but after sketches by a young Peter Paul Rubens (1577~1640).
