Washington, DC., USA, 19th January, 1992 DC. Firemen spread absorbent booms during an oil spill clean up on the Anacostia RIver in Washington DC. About 3,400 gallons of fuel oil spilled into the Anacostia River, apparently after the rupture of a pipe at a petroleum company in Southeast Washington. Firefighters and Coast Guard officials worked all day to confine the spill by lining the banks of the Anacostia with absorbent mats. The fuel spread upstream to just north of the Sousa and downstream past the 11th Street bridge, a distance of about a mile. Credit: Mark Reinstein
