Photograph by David Coleman. The Korean War Veterans Memorial, situated on the National Mall in Washington, DC, is a solemn tribute to the millions of Americans who served during the Korean War. Dedicated on July 27, 1995, the memorial commemorates the sacrifices and bravery of the United States military personnel who fought in what is often referred to as the "Forgotten War." The centerpiece of the memorial is a group of 19 stainless steel statues, each standing over seven feet tall, representing a squad on patrol. These statues, designed by sculptor Frank Gaylord, depict soldiers from different branches of the armed forces, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. Their realistic expressions and detailed uniforms evoke the harsh conditions and challenges faced during the war. Adjacent to the statues is the Wall of Remembrance, a polished black granite wall etched with the faces of over 2,400 soldiers, nurses, and other personnel who served in Korea. The wall also bears the inscription "Freedom Is Not Free," underscoring the cost of war and the value of liberty. Reflective of the soldiers' journey, the wall's surface mirrors the statues, creating a poignant visual effect that connects the past with the present. The memorial also includes a Pool of Remembrance, an inviting yet contemplative space surrounded by a grove of trees. The pool is inscribed with the numbers of those killed, wounded, missing in action, and held as prisoners of war during the conflict.
