HABITAT: Mostly restricted to well-drained sandy loam soils; populations on the slopes of the Niagara Escarpment are on stony-textured clay rich soils that are well-drained. STATUS: Rare in Canada. Rare in Vermont. NOTES: Ontario populations of Liriodendron tulipifera can produce good seed crops comparable to populations in the United States. A good seed yield, however, is dependant on a density of at least 30-50 trees per hectare, a situation rarely encountered in the province. The habitat requirements of L. tulipifera seem to be more specific in Ontario than in the United States. Most native stands in the province are restricted to mesic, well-drained, sandy loams. Because these areas are desirable for agriculture they have largely been converted to crop use, hence, this species is suffering from a net loss of habitat. Individuals that have been planted on clay loams show no evidence of further naturalization on these sites. This emphasizes the rather narrow habitat requirements of these populations in southern Ontario. Liriodendron tulipifera is a shade intolerant species that requires a moderate degree of disturbance for the successful establishment of seedlings.
