View NE across the cloister garth to the north range of monastic buildings at Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire, Wales, UK. The early 13th century range includes the warming-house with prior's lodging above, the kitchen and refectory (frater) with two alcoves at the entrance where the monks could wash and dry their hands before eating. Founded 1131 by Walter de Clare, the Norman lord of Chepstow, with monks from L'Aumône, near Chartres, it was the first Cistercian house in Wales. The great rebuilding of the monastery began at the end of the C13th under Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk. The abbey was dissolved in 1536. J. M. W. Turner visted Tintern in 1792 & 1798 painting the ruins several times.
