Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Nitrobacter sp., Gram-negative, aerobic, rod prokaryote. An obligate chemolithotrophic, nitrifying bacterium that turns nitrogen-based nitrite compounds in to nitrate, the second step in the two-step process of nitrification (in the first step Nitrosomonas sp. oxidizes ammonia to nitrite). Habitats include: soil, sewage, fresh water and marine ecosystems. Magnification: x2,200 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
