Overlooking the city on Mountpelier Hill in the Dublin Mountains,is the infamous Hellfire Club, originally constructed as a hunting lodge by William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons in 1725. It was supposedly erected on the site of a prehistoric cairn and when the property lost its roof in a gale, it was rumoured that Conolly had desecrated the site and a new roof was put in place. Following Conolly’s death in 1729, his widow rented out the lodge for meetings by a group set up in the 1730s known as the Hell Fire Club. It was an informal body, about whom many myths were created especially around the old lodge.
