These dogs we should here regard as lurchers, but on the Continent they are called matins. It is admitted to be a very old breed, and is considered by F. Cuvier to be the originator of the greyhound and the deer- hound, but without affording the slightest proof. Pennant, on the contrary, regards it as a modern breed descended from the Irish wolf-dog.
