On account of disputes as to the method oflocating the boundary, nothing was done until 1761, whenCharles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon were appointed to surveythe line. This was done from 1763 to 1767. On account ofthe Indians, Mason and Dixons Line was surveyed only for adistance of 230 miles. The location of the remaining part of thesouthern boundary along the same parallel, 39 degrees 44minutes, to its western extremity was commenced by othersurveyors in A large part of western and southwestern Pennsylvania wasclaimed by Virginia. The strife between the Virginians andPennsylvania^ continued until 1779, when an agreement wasreached by which the southern boundary was completed and PERIODS OF GOVERNMENT 17 the western boundary surveyed along the meridian of 80 de-grees 32 minutes north to the Ohio River. In 1785, Virginiahaving ceded her western lands to the United States, Pennsyl-vania alone completed the boundary to Lake Erie. Connecticut, by virtue of her sea to sea charter,laid claimto that part of Pennsylvania north of 41 degrees. Settlers fromboth States entered this region and the frequent conflicts whichtook place between these two classes of colonists from 1769 tothe Revolution is known as the Pennamite and Yankee 1782, a commission appointed by the Continental Congressmet at Trenton and awarded the disputed territory to Penn-sylvania.
