Oak trees at Holsteinborg Castle park, Southern Zealand, Denmark.
Oak trees at Holsteinborg Castle park, Southern Zealand, Denmark. Holsteinborg Castle goes in its present form back to 1639 - and before that it was a defence system going back to the 13th century. In year 1708 it comprised of 84 villages, which people worked for the castle within a feudal system called "Stavnsbåndet" (adscription). The castle has for 12 generation been owned by the Holsteinborg family. It was the 6th count, count Frederik Adolph Holsteinborg, who established the first Savings Bank in Denmark for his peasants and employees. This kind of banking system for small people spread to many other countries. The logo for the first Savings Bank was an oak, and it - although dead - still stands at the nearby familiy graveyard. The oak became the logo for many other Savings Banks in Denmark and other countries. The beautiful park at Holsteinborg is privately owned, but the public is welcomed.
