Mr. Crawford, the general manager, and , the chief engineer, are responsible for them. A method of always obtaining dry sand without the costof drying is an attractive proposition. In Hartford theproblem has been solved in this way: Over the boilerroom a sealed loft has been built that is used to heat thebarn and repair shops. Fig. 1 shows the side elevation ofthe loft and boiler room. It will be seen that the iron stackfrom the boiler down stairs passes through this room, andaround it is a wrought-iron funnel with a circular openingabout 2 ins. wide around the stack at the bottom, and witha flare about 2 ft. wide at the top. The wet sand is intro-duced into this hopper by a conveyor from the sand conveyor is run by a motor. The sand when driedby the heat of the stack spreads over the flue of the sandbin, and is perfectly dry by the time it reaches the spout,. FIG. 1.—METHOD OF DRYING SAND whence it is delivered into the sand car. In this way thesand is dried practically automatically, and by a heat thatwould otherwise be wasted. Eventually Mr. Caum proposes to fill his car sand boxeswith sand by a rather novel method. It is not generallyknown that sand, under air pressure, will flow througha pipe for several hundred feet like a viscous fluid. Thepipe itself, however, should curve to changes of direction, and sharp corners with the regular pipe fittings should beavoided. A flexible hose can be used with a valve at theend. This hose can be carried into the car and the sandbox filled without the dust and spilling of sand whichusually accompanies the replenishing of sand boxes. The use of the car rheostatic controller, which operates by moving the handle to the right to go forward, and tothe left to reverse, leads to accidents. Where a motormanis required at times to operate also a series parallel con-tioiler, w
