They were off the pilot station at Dunge-ness at three oclock the next morning and burnedtbeir blue lights for pilots, who boarded both shipsat the same time. With a moderate wind they werenow making not more than five or six knots throughthe water, but the tide was sweeping them alongfast. Off the South Foreland the wind slackenedagain with the rising sun. Here the Ariel held aslight lead and she passed Deal at 8 oclock, fol-lowed by the Taeping eight minutes later, but asthe latter vessel had sailed from the Pagoda An-.
