Syrian migrants fleeing the war and escaping to Europe, who have landed on the Greek island of Lesvos on the north coast at Efthalou, September 2015. Up to 4,000 migrants a day are landing on the island and overwhelming the authorities. They are trafficked by illegal Turkish people traffickers who charge up to $2,000 per person for a half hour ride in an overcrowded inflatable boat from the Turkish mainland to Lesvos. This mass migration of people is driven by climate change, as the Arab Spring which initiated the unrest in the Middle East started as a protest against high food prices. The prices of food rose dramatically as harvests collapsed as a result of climate change driven drought in the region.
