Folliculitis or Sycosis barbae. Infected beard hair follicles, known as sycosis barbae, at the jaw and side of the neck. The shaven area of skin is punctuated by small, pink areas of infection, a few of which have formed yellowish scabs. Hair follicles in men are liable to be infected with staphylococcal bacteria, particularly those regions subject to moistness and friction. Shaving in men can spread staphylococcal infection from follicle to follicle. It starts as a red spot around the follicular orifice and develops into a superficial pustule. Treatment is with antibiotics and careful skin hygiene.
