The melted remains of a wax ring seal that is beneath most toilet bowls. In this case the toilet bowl was removed to inspect for flood damage after the original feeder valve leaked and flooded the bathroom floor. When the bowl was removed it was revealed that the wax ring seal had virtually melted away from years of hot Arizona summers in a house with no air conditioning. These wax rings can melt if the home temperatures exceed 100*F. Once melted the seal is broken and the toilet can also leak when flushed.
